The book begins by telling the story of two young individuals who, in their youth, have gone through life changing situations. Alice, one of the main characters of the novel, permanently damages her leg in a skiing mishap. Mattia, the second of the two main characters, loses his mentally challenged twin forever-after carelessly leaving her in a park one night while he went to a party at one of their classmate's homes. Fate brings Alice and Mattia together. They find out that they share similar backgrounds of trauma that have changed their lives forever. As the story plays out, Alice and Mattia grow a strong bond for one another. They come to realize that they have a similar issue that haunts them daily-depression. They feel secluded in a world full of people; they feel as though nobody can truly understand them. This novel is truly a compelling emotional depiction of two damaged, but gentle, characters who are inwardly full of grace and elegance. It reveals the hidden hollows of the heart, emotions, and depths of true depression. While working through this interactive essay, you will be drawn in by various explainations and samples from not only this book but also from everyday life. Solitude truly is when one is surrounded by people, but feels completely alone. Depression hurts.
