Depression is relevant in today's society. More and more people are being diagnosed every day. Research is getting closer and closer to detecting the known causes of depression to form better treatments for patients who suffer with this crippling mental illness. In the book, depression is shrugged off; the parents and schools/teachers don't know how to control what is going on inside the minds of the young teens portrayed in the story. In modern times research has shown that children with depression work best on medication and psychological talk therapy to better aid in getting rid of all symptoms of depression before late teenage years or adulthood.

Now, and in the future, researchers are working to solve the dilemma faced when looking at the major causes, and affects of depression. Scientists are researching new medications to counteract the symptoms and affects of depression. Research shows that depression is no longer a trick of biological genes, or chemical imbalance, but rather deeper than that-it could be linked to DNA.

The future of depression research will work to erase the stigmas associated with this illness. It will work to see a future with people not ashamed of owning this mental illness. Without admittance, intervention, and help people cannot get better.

Future depression research and treatments will include:

  1. Medication

  2. Psychotherapy

  3. Electro-conclusive Therapy

  4. Genetics Research

  5. Brain Imaging

  6. Hormonal Abnormalities

  7. "Sugar pills"

  8. Maps of depression to understand the cycle

Many people live every day coping with depression and physical disorders that accompany it-such as anorexia. People also die every day of suicide due to lack of early detection and treatment of depression. Take Amanda Todd, for example. She was cyber-bullied to the point of severe depression and the taking of her own life. Depression claims lives every day and that is why experts are working so hard to make life better for individuals who have it.

What are the experts saying, you may ask. Experts are saying that early detection and treatment of depression is key. If depression is detected early enough it can be caught and reversed. This allows the individual to live the most normal life possible. Depression is serious, don't ignore the signs. Depression hurts.
